What do we Want? is layered with an intentional clutter of representations. Each hand-crafted plate contains symbols and images that present possible answers to the title question, although it may be unclear what those answers are and just who each plate represents: actual individuals, survey percentages, or imagined participants. The cacophony of signifiers mimics the noise of advertising, constantly telling us what our desires ought to be. Is this plate collection a coherent response or does it represent a society unable to decide how to live together?
